Hace un poco más de dos años, cuando vivíamos en Chihuahua, vi casualmente un programa de la televisión por cable, en el cual tuve la oportunidad de escuchar una impresionante obra musical que ha quedado guardada para siempre en mi memoria. No sólo es una obra de impresionante belleza. Es también una de las más grandes muestras que he conocido en mi vida sobre la magia de la libertad creativa. Abundan en el mundo quienes piensan que no hay necesidad de hacer las cosas de otra manera diferente a la cual siempre se han hecho. En lo personal, yo creo que lo único que no admite cambio alguno son las leyes de Dios y todo lo que de ellas se deriva, pero así como nuestro creativo y poderoso Padre Celestial hizo una amplia gama de creaciones usando todos los colores y materiales imaginables en una infinita cantidad de combinaciones, así mismo ha facultado a los hombres para combinar las ideas y las posibilidades, de tal forma que cada día nacen grandiosas creaciones que hacen renovar al mundo.
La siguiente obra me parece un maravilloso
ejemplo de ello. Casi ningún ser humano
hubiera pensado en combinar estos tipos de música entre sí, porque son
aparentemente discordantes. No parecen tener nada qué ver el uno con el otro.
Son de épocas y culturas ajenas entre sí.
Las voces y los instrumentos
mismos no habían sido tocados en el mismo momento unos con otros. ¿Profundas
voces masculinas de hombres de raza negra, entonando un cántico de tipo
africano, combinados con fragmentos de la inmortal obra de Johann Sebastian Bach,
la cantata 147, “Jesús, alegría de los hombres”? Y después, ¿un angelical coro
de niños entonando un fragmento de alabanza? Y después, ¿volver al ensamble de
voces africanas, con una combinación mágica de instrumentos sumamente
diferentes entre sí? ¡Increíble!

no había sabido nada de Kurt Bestor, su genial autor, antes de escuchar esta
obra. Ahora sé que él es un músico, autor y arreglista muy reconocido en su
país y en otras partes del mundo, y que tiene una vasta y hermosa obra musical
en su haber. También sé que él es mormón. Yo quiero llevarlo a tus oídos por si
no lo habías conocido antes.
Esta obra, titulada Sage of Lamberene, fue
compuesta en honor de Albert Schweitzer, un médico alemán que dedicó su vida a
prestar su ayuda y servicio en un remoto lugar de África, llamado Lamberene,
después de que la parábola del joven rico, escrita en la Biblia, tocó su
corazón.

A little more than two years ago, when we
lived in Chihuahua, I watched by chance a TV program in which I had the
opportunity to listen to a spectacular musical that has been kept in my mind
forever. Not only is it a musical of great beauty, it is also one of the

things that don’t need any changes are God’s laws and commandments, and

materials in an infinite amount of combinations, He has given men the capacity
to combine ideas and possibilities, so that everyday great creations that renew
the world are born.
The next musical is a wonderful example of
this to me. Almost no human being would have thought about combining these
kinds of music together, because they are apparently disharmonious. It seems
that they don’t have anything to do with each other. They are from times and
cultures distant from each other. The voices and instruments themselves had not
been played at the same time. Deep male
voices of black race men, singing an African-style song, combined with
fragments of the immortal musical by Johann Sebastian Bach, the cantata 147,
“Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”? And then, an angelical choir of children singing
a song of praise? And later, return to the African voices ensemble, with a
magical combination of musical instruments extremely different from each other?

I had not known anything about Kurt Bestor,
its great author, before listening to this musical. Now I know he is a musician, author and arranger, renowned in his country and in other parts of the world,
who has a vast and beautiful musical work of his own. I also know that he is
Mormon.
